Have you been in an awkward situation that you’re with your bosses and colleagues out for lunch or dinner and there’s a bunch of delicious food in front of you BUT you have no idea how to use chopsticks to eat?
Two weeks ago, we had a business trip in Singapore. Sales operations team from India and Philippines gathered in our Asia/Pacific headquarters in preparation for the coming fiscal year.
During the team’s lunch, the above scenario happened to some of our colleagues BUT we didn’t let them feel that awkwardness because we’ve been in that situation too! Instead, we threw jokes on using chopsticks and had fun in that moment. I really enjoyed the moments spent together even for a short time. Priceless!
Madi is one of my closest friends/colleagues among the sales operations team. I used to call her my virtual friend because she’s based in India while I’m based here in the Philippines. We were both so happy to finally meet. We had overnight catch ups, singing (everywhere!), laughing… We really had fun while at work.
But going back, how do we really use chopsticks?
Using chopsticks can be very tricky and it requires a LOT of practice…and PATIENCE. Worry no more! Here’s a simple guide on how to use chopsticks…
What you’ll need:
- pair of chopsticks
- your dominant hand
- food for practice (I used uncooked popcorns in my demo.)
- Hold one of the chopsticks like a pen using your index finger, middle finger and thumb. This is the part that moves to pick up food. Actually, the index and middle finger are the ones that moves more while the thumb supports them.
- Insert the other chopsticks underneath, resting on the ring finger. This should be the immovable part.
- Pick up food by clipping them in between. Remember, don’t put pressure on it.

Hooray for Madi! ❤ 🙂
Don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work the first time. Patience is a virtue. 🙂 And one more, you can ALWAYS ask for spoon and fork if you’re not comfortable with it.
Until my next trip. Bye!
